Data protection officer training
Data Protection Officer (DPO) training in Kenya
Practical training for data protection officers in Kenya and for the people stepping into the role. Learn what the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019 expects of a controller or processor, how to run the processes a DPO is accountable for, and how to bring the rest of the organisation with you.
Many DPOs in Kenya are appointed from legal, compliance, IT or HR roles and learn the job on the go. This page sets out what the role involves and the training that builds it, from Kenya DPA compliance to internationally recognised privacy certification.
What a DPO does in a Kenyan organisation
The Data Protection Act lets a data controller or processor designate a data protection officer, and many organisations that process personal data at scale, or handle sensitive data, choose to. The DPO advises the organisation on its obligations, monitors compliance and is the contact point for the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC).
- Keep the organisation's registration with the ODPC and its records of processing current
- Advise on lawful bases, consent, retention and transfers of personal data outside Kenya
- Run Data Protection Impact Assessments for high risk processing
- Handle access, correction and deletion requests from data subjects
- Lead breach response, including notice to the Data Commissioner within 72 hours of becoming aware
- Train staff so everyday decisions about personal data are the right ones
Why the training matters
The ODPC can investigate complaints, issue enforcement notices and impose administrative fines of up to KES 5 million or 1% of the previous year's annual turnover, whichever is lower. A DPO who knows the Act and can show a working privacy programme is the organisation's best defence.
The role is also a growing career path. Banks, insurers, SACCOs, hospitals, schools, telcos and public bodies all process personal data and need people who can make compliance practical.
Your training path
- Start with Data Protection (Kenya DPA): the Act, data subject rights, DPIAs and breach notification, applied to everyday work
- Train the staff who handle personal data with the same course, so the whole organisation works to one standard
- Add ISO/IEC 27701 Lead Implementer or Lead Auditor when you want an internationally recognised privacy credential

Common questions
Is a DPO required by law in Kenya?
The Data Protection Act allows a controller or processor to designate or appoint a data protection officer, and it can be a staff member or someone external. Whether you appoint one, the organisation remains responsible for complying with the Act, and a trained DPO is the usual way to show it.
Do I need a law degree to be a DPO?
No. The Act asks for relevant academic or professional qualifications, which can include knowledge of data protection law and practice. Many DPOs come from compliance, audit, IT and HR. Practical knowledge of the Act and of how your organisation handles data matters most.
Is the data protection course specific to Kenyan law?
Yes. It is anchored to the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019 and the role of the ODPC, while teaching principles that carry over to frameworks such as the GDPR.
How do I pay?
Add a course to your cart and check out. You get an invoice you can pay by M-Pesa, in full or in three monthly instalments, and the course opens as soon as payment is confirmed.
Can an employer check my certificate?
Yes. Every Neurobyte certificate carries a unique ID and a QR code. Anyone can scan it or enter the ID at training.neurobyte.co.ke/verify to confirm it is genuine and issued to you.
